How to Take Control of Your Wireless Microphones
Show notes, images, and links: http://wp.me/p1sfi8-1DH Support Sound Design Live on Patreon for as little as $1: https://www.patreon.com/sounddesignlive In this episode of Sound Design Live I interview Karl Winkler from Lectrosonics. We discuss the basics of frequency coordination, wireless microphone myths, and how the Super Bowl manages 1,000 channels of wireless devices. Karl also explains what a backup frequency is, whether bluetooth devices, microwaves and cell phones will cause interference, and how to prepare for rogue wireless devices. 1. Music in this episode by The Giovanni Quartet, Brodsky Quartet, The Bartok Quartet, and Brentano String Quartet. 2. USC Recording Arts
 3. Karl's principles for success in audio 1. Have a good attitude. If your job is to roll tires from the back of the store to the front, you should be so good that people will pay to see you do it. Don't be afraid of the work or think of it as being beneath you. 2. The basics always matter. Every art and science requires you to know the fundamentals. 3. Really listen. Learn to use use your ears as a troubleshooting tool. See Trouble-Shooting Audio Systems tutorial. 4. SynAudCon - Making Wireless Work
 5. Wireless Workbench
 6. Myths 1. Wireless mics are voodoo. 2. A directional antenna is always better. 3. I can get more range with boosted antennas. 4. Lectrosonics is too expensive. 7. Cavity Filter = Pass band filter. Blocks out bands of frequencies to focus only on the ones you want. 8. Interview with Jim Venable from the Wireless Speaker Association
 9. Axient system from Shure
 10. Spectra Pulse from Audio Technica
 11. Lectrosonics Facebook Group and FAQ page
 12. Words 1. Shark Fins = Directional antennas = LPDA (log periodic dipol arrays) 2. Intermodulation distortion = Occurs when two or more signals mix within an active device and create phantom frequencies. 3. Backup/spare frequencies = Pre-coordinated channels that you don't need at the moment, but are already calculated to fit, preventing guess work. 13. Big Mistakes 1. Not separating your IEMs, comms, and mics into different bands. 2. Bad antenna placement. 3. Not calculating signal loss for long antenna cable. 14. Quotes 1. "Audio is a guilded career. You start as an apprentice. That's how most people get their start." 2. "Your attitude is irreplaceable." 3. "There is something to learn from everything you do in life." 4. "Any time you add an active component, you are potentially raising the noise floor and increasing distortion. It can mix signals and create intermodulation products. You always want a net zero gain between antenna and receiver."

We talk about noise induced hearing loss, common hearing loss myths, and what you need to know to stay healthy and protect your most valuable asset. We also discuss vertigo, motion sickness, how to calculate your noise exposure risk, hearing loss rehabilitation, adult stem cell transplant hearing loss, and other alternatives to hearing aids. Details from the podcast: 1. All music in this podcast by Curtis Craig

 3. Types of hearing loss: 1. Mechanical physical injury/trauma to hair cells from impulse sound. 2. Metabolic/chemical injury from build up of calcium during stress, causing hair cell death from the accumulation of noise exposure. 4. Myths 1. If you have hearing loss, things must be louder in order for you to hear them. 2. If you already have hearing loss, you don't need ear plugs. 5. 7. Quotes 1. "Once you have a little bit of hearing loss, especially noise-induced hearing loss, you are more vulnerable to more noise-induced hearing loss." 2. "Hearing tests are almost always covered by health insurance. Hearing aids almost never are."

11 Lessons I Learned From Ken 'Pooch' Van Druten
Original post: http://wp.me/p1sfi8-1iW Support Sound Design Live on Patreon for as little as $1: https://www.patreon.com/sounddesignlive In this episode of Sound Design Live I talk with Kenneth 'Pooch' Van Druten, the FOH sound engineer for Linkin Park, Alice and Chains, Kid Rock, and System of a Down. We discuss: 1. How Van Druten got his first job in audio. 2. The number one skill that gets him in the door for every job. 3. The value of microphone placement. 4. Why speaker coverage is important beyond anything else. 5. How to set gates using side-chains and virtual sound check. 6. Results and trends from Van Druten's annual hearing health check. 7. Mixing monitors for Pantera. 8. Van Druten's SPL strategy for Linkin Park. 9. How Van Druten managed to record and mix every Linkin Park show for two years solid. 10. Whether mixing live show recordings is a viable second income stream? 11. Good plugins for vocals. Quotes: "One of the things that you have to do to break into this industry is be willing to do anything." "Often someone will ask me, 'How'd you do that?' And I'll say, 'I have no idea.'" "I worked with an engineer that made me spend an entire day moving an SM57 microphone centimeters around a guitar amp." "The only kind of relationship I can have with an artist is an honest one." "Being a great system engineer is a different skill set than the one I have." "Coverage is important beyond anything else." "The entire drum kit is an instrument. Not just the tom or the snare." "There are situations when you just can't win." "I listen to 200 shows a year. It's important to me not to listen to those at 106dB A-weighted." "You mix at 100dB? That doesn't mean anything." "I don't know if you've measured crowds recently. At a Linkin Park show, if there are 11 songs, there are 11 times where it goes to 107 dB A-weighted no problem." "I feel responsible not only for my own hearing, but for the hearing of people that come to my shows." Takeaways: Don't wait till after college to get an internship. Van Druten started as a studio intern at a local recording studio when he entered school and by the time he graduated he was the head engineer. Learn social intelligence and empathy (i.e., how to talk to crazy people) because you have to be able to get along with them before you can get the job. Mic placement is important. Time spent learning it now will benefit you for the rest of your career.
